Winter Vacations

Sicily in the Winter: A Traveler’s Delight

Sicily is definitely a gratifying destination no matter which time of the year you choose to visit. But winters are particularly memorable.

Winters in Sicily are mild. Of course, there is snow on Mt. Etna and maybe some of the villages on its slopes but that is about it.

And surely there are rainy days and winds as everyone would expect being on an island. But none of the aforementioned is causing any real or continuous disruption to enjoying the island and its treasures.

Locals giving advice in places like TripAdvisor describe winters as severe making special mentions of the need that may arise for the use of snow chains when driving. It seems that for them is an upsetting and disturbing factor.

Probably because they do not take into consideration the fact that the majority of travelers are used to winter conditions much more severe than the Sicilians are used to.

Or to the actual fact that if a traveler wishes, can completely avoid areas with snow and choose another route for their exploration.

The benefits of visiting Sicily in winter are many with the most important one being that you will be able to actually treasure your visits to the ancient sites, the monuments, the villages, and the towns in almost absolute privacy and peace.

In addition to that, the locals are more relaxed and everywhere you go they seem to be more social. Happy to sit with you and make you feel like you are part of their families. Even help you organize your next day’s program.

It is though true that places like Taormina may seem surprisingly quiet especially in January with a lot of shops closed. But still, if you are not there for the country-club-style setting then you will not mind at all.

Sicily’s roads are great for all drivers. Highways are connecting all different parts of the island and the main roads are well-maintained.

Naturally, the roads leading to small villages or lesser-known areas need more attention but even they are fun to drive through. And Yes, they drive on the “wrong” side of the road if you are from the UK or Australia or…

Renting a car and exploring the island at your pace is the best option we can think of.
