Athens is one of Europe’s most magnetic destinations—a crossroads of history, business, culture, and sun-drenched leisure. But before the Acropolis, the food, and the sea breeze comes your very first impression: the airport. And for Athens, that impression is, quite simply, a pleasant surprise.
Airports can be stressful, chaotic places that leave you overwhelmed before you’ve even had your first Greek coffee. But not in Athens. Since our first review back in 2019, and after countless returns since then, we can honestly say that Athens International Airport (Eleftherios Venizelos) remains one of the smoothest, most well-designed, and reliable airports in the world.
First Impressions Matter
The airport is modern, spacious, and remarkably easy to navigate. While it is indeed large, it never feels confusing. The layout flows logically, signage is clear, and there’s a noticeable lack of the hustle-induced chaos that defines many other major European airports.
Athens International Airport is clean, well-kept, and welcoming—something you feel the moment you land.
The Layout
The terminal is structured across three levels:
- Ground Floor: Arrivals Hall.
- First Floor: Departures area.
- Third Floor: Observation area with a restaurant and a cafeteria, ideal for plane-spotting while sipping a coffee. There’s also a small but fascinating museum on this floor, which includes archaeological findings discovered during the airport’s construction. It’s a lovely reminder that in Greece, even airports come with layers of history.
Arriving in Athens
Once you step off your plane and pass through passport control, baggage claim is simple and well-signposted. If you’re arriving from a non-Schengen country, customs is quick and efficient. Along the way, you’ll spot several duty-free mini-stands for those impulse last-minute buys.
After customs, you’ll exit into a long, wide public corridor filled with light and motion. Here, you’ll find everything from ATMs and car rental desks to florists, pharmacies, travel agencies, hair salons, and coffee shops. Free Wi-Fi hotspots and plenty of clean seating areas make the wait pleasant and easy.
Walk through the terminal and you’ll also spot clear signage leading to taxis, buses, and trains. Even navigating to the Metro station is intuitive.
Departing from Athens
If you’re flying out, arriving ahead of schedule is always wise, especially between March and October, or during holiday periods and weekends.
The check-in counters are logically arranged and the airport staff are generally friendly and professional. That said, queues can grow, especially during peak times, so it’s best to build in buffer time for both check-in and luggage drop-off.
Once you’re done, head to security. Here, you’ll notice that Athens takes hand-luggage screening seriously. Don’t bring prohibited items, and make sure your liquids are properly packed.
A Silent Airport
One important note: Athens International Airport is a “silent” airport. This means no loudspeaker announcements for boarding calls or flight changes. So don’t wait to hear your gate called—keep your eyes on the electronic boards. They are everywhere and are updated efficiently.
Post-Security: Duty-Free and More
After passport and security control, you’re in for a treat. The duty-free shopping experience is excellent. First, you’ll walk through the traditional duty-free section with perfumes, chocolates, liquor, and tobacco. Then come the brand-name boutiques, with everything from sunglasses to luxury watches, designer clothes, shoes, and electronics.
Whether you’re shopping or just browsing, it’s an experience in itself.
Cafés, Dining & Lounging
There are numerous options for quick snacks, full meals, or simply a good coffee—which, let’s be honest, is a big part of any Greek travel experience. From Greek bites to international fare, there’s something for every palate. We particularly appreciate the fact that there are ample seating areas throughout the terminal, something not to be taken for granted in global airports.
Smokers, Rejoice
Athens International is a non-smoking airport, but designated smoking areas are available and easy to find—especially in the Extra-Schengen section, where they’re often next to coffee shops and gates. It’s a thoughtful balance that keeps all travelers content.
Free Wi-Fi That Works
Unlike some other major airports, where “free Wi-Fi” means ten minutes of frustration and a dropped connection, Athens delivers on its promise. Free internet is available throughout the airport, and it’s fast, reliable, and simple to access.
The Museum
A standout feature for travelers with a little extra time is the airport’s museum on the third floor. Here you’ll find displays of ancient artifacts unearthed during the construction of the airport, giving you a head start on your immersion into Greek history. It’s not large, but it’s beautifully presented and utterly unique.
Accessibility & Transport
The airport is also incredibly well-connected:
- Metro Line 3 goes directly from the airport to the heart of Athens in about 40 minutes.
- Express buses run frequently to Syntagma, Piraeus, and beyond.
- Taxis and private transfers are easy to locate just outside the arrivals area.
Whether you’re heading to a boutique hotel in Plaka, a ferry in Piraeus, or straight to a beach in Glyfada, the airport makes it simple.
Still Excellent in 2024 and Beyond
Now, more than four years since this original review was written in 2019, we can confidently say that Athens International Airport continues to operate at an exceptional level. The building remains in great condition, the facilities are well-maintained, and service standards are still high.
Even after a global pandemic and changes in travel behavior, the airport hasn’t lost its charm or its functionality. It continues to serve as a welcoming, well-run gateway to Greece—and in our experience, it outperforms many newer or flashier airports elsewhere in Europe.
