Lying in the shade of the Acropolis, Monastiraki is one of the most popular areas of the city of Athens for both residents and tourists.
Named for the monastery that lies to one side of the square, this is a place full of shops of all kinds, from clothing to souvenirs to jewellery and local art crafts. A more traditional place.
Since the area abuts Plaka, you might even wander into Monastiraki without being aware of it.
Sunday is the best day to enjoy Monastiraki, for the vibrant Flea Market stretches through the streets around Avyssinias Square. On Sundays in winter, young artists sell handmade silver jewellery at great prices.
