Trapani is only a 20-minute drive away. Marsala can be reached in about 45 minutes by car. And Palermo which is about 1 hour and 45 minutes away by car.

Erice: A Town Whispering Through Time
The ancient Greek name of Erice was Eryx (Έρυξ in Greek), and its foundation was associated with the eponymous Greek hero Eryx. Though not a true Greek colony – the Phoenicians were its founders – Eryx became largely Hellenized, absorbing Greek culture and influence. However, its fortunes changed dramatically during the First Punic War. The Carthaginians, locked in a bitter struggle with Rome for control of the Mediterranean, destroyed Eryx, and from then on, the town’s importance began to wane.
Fast forward centuries, and a new chapter unfolds. In 831, Arab forces conquered Eryx, renaming it Cebel Hamid (meaning “Mountain of Hamid” in Western sources). Arab rule lasted until the Norman conquest of Sicily, when the town received yet another name – Monte San Giuliano – a moniker that clung to it for centuries.
But Erice, perched on its mountaintop, has a stubborn spirit. Despite conquests and destruction, it endured. The Normans, recognizing its strategic significance, added their own architectural touch, building a fortress that still stands today. Erice slowly transformed into a medieval gem, its stone walls rising ever higher, its cobbled streets whispering stories of resilience.
Today, Erice remains a place of timeless beauty, a living museum where history whispers from every corner. As you wander its streets, you can almost hear the echoes of the past, a captivating story waiting to be unraveled.
