That’s what we experienced when we visited Alberobello, a charming town in the Puglia region of Italy. Alberobello has become a popular destination in recent years, known for its unique architecture of white-washed buildings with conical roofs known as trulli.
And our favorite part of this enchanting town is Rione dei Monti.
A hillside neighborhood where 1030 trulli are lined along the narrow and irregular streets that wind their way to the top of the hill. At the summit stands the stunning church of Sant’Antonio da Padova, offering a breathtaking view of the town below.
As you wander through the streets of Alberobello, you’ll feel like you’ve been transported back in time. The town’s architecture, characterized by the Trulli, is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Undeniably, is unlike anything else you’ll find in Italy or the world. The trulli are made from local limestone and have cone-shaped roofs made from stones that are carefully placed on top of each other. They were originally built as homes for farmers and peasants, but today many have been converted into restaurants, shops, and accommodations.
Beyond the trulli, Alberobello has much to offer visitors.
The town is home to several museums, including the Trullo Sovrano Museum, which is housed in a large trulli and showcases the town’s history and culture. Another must-see is the Basilica Minore dei Santi Medici, a stunning Baroque church that dates back to the 18th century. But what really sets Alberobello apart is its atmosphere. There’s a palpable sense of community in the town, and locals are friendly and welcoming to visitors. Whether you’re wandering through the streets, sampling local cuisine, or enjoying a glass of wine at a café, you’ll feel like you’re part of something special.
For a unique experience
And if you’re looking for a unique experience, consider visiting Alberobello during one of the town’s festivals. The Festa di San Giuseppe, held on March 19th, is a celebration of the town’s patron saint and features a parade, music, and traditional food. Another popular event is the Notte di San Lorenzo, held on August 10th, which is a night of stargazing and music.
All in all, Alberobello is a destination that should be on every traveler’s bucket list. With its fairytale-like charm, rich history, and vibrant atmosphere, it’s a town that will capture your heart and leave you with memories that will last a lifetime.
