Is Aegean Airlines Business Class Worth It? A Brutally Honest Review of European Flights

When it comes to business class, many travelers expect a higher level of comfort, service, and luxury. But after my recent experience flying with Aegean Airlines between Athens, London, and Ioannina, I’m convinced that their business class offering doesn’t deliver the value you’d expect – and certainly isn’t worth the hefty price tag.

Empty Seats and Little Else

On paper, paying thousands of euros for a business class ticket between European destinations should guarantee a premium experience. However, Aegean’s business class often falls short of expectations. While you may have an empty seat next to you, that’s about the only “extra” you’re getting. Sure, there’s a bit more space, but the difference between business and economy class isn’t enough to justify the price difference.

I flew from Athens to London, then from London to Athens, and finally to Ioannina, and I can confidently say the business-class offering felt underwhelming. The lack of additional services, comfort, or meaningful benefits left me questioning the value of paying for business class.

Subpar Service and Rude Crew

One of the most disappointing aspects of my experience was the flight attendants’ attitude. Across all my flights, I was greeted with indifference and, at times, rudeness. The crew seemed far more interested in socializing with certain passengers than attending to the needs of others.

Particularly on the flight from London Heathrow to Athens, the staff barely acknowledged the business-class passengers, which is unacceptable for a service meant to prioritize customer care.

The absence of basic hospitality in business class was glaring, and the overall service left me feeling as though I was flying on a budget airline, not with a premium carrier.

Lackluster Food – Even with Porcelain

Food is often touted as one of the highlights of business class, but Aegean’s offering was average at best. Just because it’s served on proper porcelain doesn’t make up for the lack of quality or variety. The food was essentially the same as what you’d get in economy class, and it certainly didn’t feel like it justified paying over 1000 euros more per way. The quality was uninspiring, and the presentation didn’t make up for the lack of wow factor.

In business class, you expect something special – a culinary experience that matches the price of the ticket. Unfortunately, Aegean misses the mark here, offering nothing more than what you’d expect in the standard class.

Business Lounge? Not So Much.

If you’re flying business class, you’d expect lounge access to be part of the deal, right? Well, think again. The business lounge at Heathrow Airport was located far from the gates, and passengers had to rush to make their flights. Given the distance, it became more of a hassle than a luxury. To make matters worse, the Lufthansa lounge, which was closer to the gates, was under renovation and unavailable, leaving travelers scrambling for space and time to catch their flights. For the price you’re paying for a business ticket, lounge access should be a seamless part of the experience – but in this case, it was just another inconvenience.

And it doesn’t end there. After landing in Athens from London, I tried to access the business lounge for my connecting flight to Ioannina, only to be told that my boarding pass – which clearly stated “business class” – was not valid for entry. The lounge staff informed me that my business class ticket did not grant me access, even though my boarding pass indicated otherwise. This was incredibly frustrating, especially since I was paying for a service that was not being delivered.

Aegean’s Lackluster Response

As if the experience couldn’t get worse, I took to Twitter (now X) to share my frustrations and hoped to receive a response from customer service. The Aegean team responded promptly and advised me to reach out to them via Direct Messages (DMs). However, when I did so, I was greeted with automated replies, and there was no way to contact a real agent. It felt as though the DM system was just a way to move complaints out of the public view, rather than actually resolve them.

Only when I publicly retweeted my frustration about the useless DM system did I get a response. I sent a screenshot of my boarding pass as requested, but unfortunately, I never received a reply from the airline. This lack of real customer service was yet another disappointment.

A Disastrous Overall Experience

From start to finish, this was the worst business class experience I’ve ever had. I paid a significant premium for the promise of comfort, service, and luxury, but all I got was a lackluster experience. Between the indifferent and rude crew, mediocre food, and lack of real business class service, it’s hard to justify spending so much more on a ticket for such a subpar experience.

In the end, Aegean Airlines’ business class simply doesn’t deliver what it promises – and it’s certainly not worth the premium. Whether you’re flying between Athens and London or anywhere else in Europe, my advice is to think twice before shelling out extra money for this underwhelming offering. There are plenty of other airlines that offer better service, food, and comfort for a fraction of the price.
