Airbnb has revolutionized the vacation rental industry with its platform that allows individuals to rent out their homes, apartments, or rooms to travelers seeking a more authentic and local experience.
However, is the concept of Airbnb truly novel?
Many locals in Greece and Italy, particularly those over 50, recall the hundreds of signs advertising “rooms to let” that were spread throughout their communities in the past. The tradition of opening one’s home to travelers dates back to the 19th century and beyond. During the 60s, 70s, 80s, and early 90s, signs advertising vacation rentals were commonplace in the Mediterranean. Homeowners would wait at ports with pamphlets, offering their homes to travelers. These hosts in their majority, were truly hospitable, welcoming guests and ensuring they had a wonderful stay. They would offer gifts of local produce, home-cooked food, and their own olive oil and wine. Sometimes, guests were even invited to join in family celebrations or Sunday lunches without expectation of anything in return. This genuine sense of hospitality made for a unique and unforgettable experience, not just a holiday.
Unfortunately, things in tourism have changed.
The internet has brought back old concepts in new forms, and Airbnb is a prime example. While the platform offers convenience and accessibility… Travelers no longer have the chance to physically contact the homeowner or even check the home or room before booking. They must rely solely on the honesty of the host and the details provided in the listing. Furthermore, as the popularity of Airbnb grows, many individuals have become hosts who have started seeing their guests as nothing more than a source of income.
The once genuine sense of hospitality has been lost in the pursuit of profit.
The personal connection between the host and guest has been replaced by a transactional relationship. In addition, Airbnb’s impact on local communities has been a subject of debate. As more and more homes are converted into vacation rentals, the availability of long-term rentals for locals decreases. This can lead to an increase in rent prices and a shortage of affordable housing, ultimately affecting the community’s character and culture.
With all this in mind, and while Airbnb has undoubtedly brought innovation to the vacation rental industry, it has also contributed to the loss of the traditional sense of hospitality. As travelers, we must be mindful of the impact our choices have on the communities we visit, and consider alternative accommodations that may allow for a more authentic and culturally immersive experience.
